NAPLAN Maths Tutoring in Sydney For Years 3, 5, 7 & 9
Clear, personalised numeracy support that strengthens maths foundations, identifies learning gaps and builds confidence with purposeful NAPLAN-style practice.
Strong NAPLAN Preparation Starts With Stronger Maths
Practice tests can help a student become familiar with question styles, but repetition alone is not always enough. If a student is missing an underlying skill, the lesson first needs to make that concept clearer.
Our approach combines explanation, targeted practice and exam-style application so the student is not simply memorising answers.
Understand the Concept
Explain the maths in a clear, step-by-step way before expecting the student to work independently.
Practise the Skill
Use carefully selected questions to reinforce the method and reveal where the student is still unsure.
Apply It to Problems
Move from straightforward examples to unfamiliar and problem-solving questions.
Build Confidence
Increase difficulty when the student is ready rather than overwhelming them too early.
The Maths Skills Students Need to Use, Not Just Recall
NAPLAN numeracy questions can draw on several areas of school maths. Preparation therefore needs both secure foundations and the ability to apply those skills to unfamiliar questions.
Number & Algebra
Number sense, operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, patterns and age-appropriate algebraic thinking.
Measurement & Space
Measurement, units, time, geometry, spatial reasoning and using diagrams accurately.
Statistics & Probability
Reading tables and graphs, interpreting data, comparing information and age-appropriate probability.
NAPLAN Maths Tutoring for Years 3, 5, 7 & 9
The difficulty, language and mathematical expectations change as students move through school. Preparation should therefore match the student’s year level and current confidence.
Build Comfortable Foundations
Focus on clear number understanding, basic operations, measurement, simple data and becoming comfortable reading maths questions.
Develop Multi-Step Thinking
Strengthen core arithmetic, fractions and decimals while building confidence with more involved worded and problem-solving questions.
Transition to More Abstract Maths
Support students as questions increasingly require proportional reasoning, stronger number skills, algebraic thinking and more independent problem solving.
Strengthen Reasoning Under Pressure
Consolidate high-school numeracy, algebra, geometry, data and multi-step reasoning while practising efficient exam approaches.
A Clear NAPLAN Maths Preparation Process
The aim is not to throw random test papers at the student. We first identify the areas that need attention, then build practice around those needs.
Assess
Start with suitable questions to understand current strengths, weaknesses and confidence.
Find the Gaps
Look for prerequisite skills that may be making current numeracy questions unnecessarily difficult.
Explain
Teach difficult concepts clearly with worked examples and step-by-step guidance.
Practise
Reinforce the skill with targeted questions and gradually increase the level when appropriate.
Apply
Use mixed and exam-style questions so students practise choosing the right method independently.
We can step back and strengthen earlier foundations while continuing to support the student’s current school and NAPLAN needs.
Clear Explanations With Targeted Maths Practice
Good preparation material should help the student understand what they are doing—not simply generate more questions.
Concise Concept Notes
Important theory and methods can be explained in a short, student-friendly format before practice begins.
Targeted Worksheets
Practice can be selected according to the topic and the student’s current level instead of using one fixed workbook.
Answers and Worked Support
Students can check their work and review how a method should be applied.
NAPLAN-Style Practice
Once the underlying skill is secure, mixed and test-style questions help students apply it more independently.
Free NAPLAN Maths Practice Tests
Students can use the existing Aussie Math Practice tests for extra numeracy practice and familiarity with NAPLAN-style questions.
Year 9 students: the current page source does not contain a dedicated Year 9 free practice-test URL. Year 9 students can still receive targeted NAPLAN maths tutoring and assessment support.
Official NAPLAN Past Papers
Older official papers can still be useful for additional question practice. They should be treated as supplementary material rather than an exact copy of the current online NAPLAN experience.

The same diagnostic and targeted approach can be used in either lesson format.
Face-to-Face Tutoring
Telopea is the main face-to-face tutoring location. Selected nearby arrangements may be available depending on tutor, location and timetable availability.
Online NAPLAN Maths Tutoring
Live online lessons can combine explanations, worked examples, practice questions and assessment preparation without requiring travel.
Preparation Should Build Confidence, Not Add Unnecessary Pressure
NAPLAN is one assessment. Preparation should be proportionate and useful: strengthen the maths, become familiar with question styles, practise applying skills and help the student feel more prepared.
Individual starting point: practice can be adapted to the student rather than forcing a standard program.
Clear explanations: the method is explained before students are expected to repeat it.
Purposeful practice: questions are used to strengthen skills and uncover uncertainty.
Realistic expectations: no promises of guaranteed scores or instant results.

Does Aussie Math Tutor NSW teach all parts of NAPLAN?
Our tutoring focuses on NAPLAN maths and numeracy. We are a maths tutoring service and do not present this page as dedicated reading, writing or language-conventions tutoring.
How do you prepare a student for NAPLAN maths?
We identify the student’s current strengths and gaps, explain difficult concepts, provide targeted practice and then use mixed or NAPLAN-style questions so the student can apply the maths more independently.
Can you help if my child is below their year level?
Yes. If an earlier skill is making current numeracy work difficult, tutoring can step back to strengthen that foundation while still supporting the student’s current school and NAPLAN needs.
Do you provide free NAPLAN maths practice tests?
The current website links to free Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 maths practice tests on Aussie Math Practice. These can be used as supplementary practice alongside tutoring.
Can NAPLAN maths tutoring be done online?
Yes. Online lessons can include explanations, worked examples, guided practice and NAPLAN-style questions using a live interactive format.
How much NAPLAN preparation does my child need?
It depends on the student’s current numeracy level, confidence, learning gaps and how much time remains before the assessment. We prefer to assess first rather than recommend the same amount of preparation to every student.
Are old NAPLAN papers still useful?
Older papers can still provide useful maths-question practice, but they should be treated as supplementary material rather than an exact representation of the current online assessment format.
