Why multiplication facts matter in NSW primary maths

Times tables are not an isolated memory task. They support equal groups, division, fractions, area, multi-digit calculation and later algebra. The NSW syllabus develops this understanding progressively rather than asking every child to memorise the same set of facts at the same age.

  • Stage 1: students use the structure of equal groups to solve multiplication problems and sharing or grouping to solve division problems.
  • Stage 2: students represent and use multiplicative relations to 10 × 10 and solve missing-value multiplication and division number sentences.
  • Fluency matters: stronger fact recall reduces the amount of attention spent on basic calculation when students move into harder multi-step mathematics.
Important: the game's ×12, ×15 and ×20 levels are extension practice. The current NSW Stage 2 outcome specifically refers to multiplicative relations to 10 × 10; the higher levels are included for students who benefit from additional fluency and challenge.

Which multiplication tables should my child practise?

Use school year as a guide, but choose the game level that matches the child's actual understanding. A Year 5 student who still relies on counting for 6 × 7 may benefit more from secure ×2–×10 practice than immediately jumping to harder facts.

Years 1–2: Understand equal groups

Years 3–4: Build facts to 10 × 10

How to use the times tables game effectively

Repeating random questions is not always enough. Use the game to move from understanding to recall in small, achievable steps.

Start with one table

Choose a single table such as ×4 or ×7 when that fact family is uncertain. Mixed practice is more useful after individual tables are becoming secure.

Use “Show me a way”

If the answer is not known, use the visual groups or skip-counting support. The goal is to connect the fact to meaning, not simply guess.

Add missing-number questions

Questions such as 7 × ? = 42 strengthen the connection between multiplication and division and stop practice becoming only pattern recognition.

Repeat briefly and regularly

One focused round repeated across several days is often more useful than a long session that becomes frustrating or careless.

Some students know that multiplication means equal groups but still calculate every fact by repeated counting. Others can recite a table in order but cannot answer the same facts when they are mixed. These are different learning needs.

  • Concept gap: the student is unsure what 6 × 4 actually represents.
  • Fluency gap: the student understands the groups but basic facts consume too much time and attention.
  • Transfer gap: the student can chant “6, 12, 18...” but struggles when asked 6 × 7 out of sequence.
  • Inverse-operation gap: multiplication is known, but related division and missing-factor questions remain difficult.
