The Answer Is Not the Only Skill: Children Need to See How to Reach 10

A child may know that 8 + 6 = 14 after counting, but still not recognise the more efficient structure inside the calculation. This game makes that hidden structure visible: split the second number, use one part to reach 10, then use the part that remains.

Addition example
8 + 6 = 14
Split 6 into 2 and 4
8 + 2 = 10
10 + 4 = 14
For addition, the first part moves the starting number up to the next multiple of 10. The child then adds what is left.
Subtraction example
16 − 8 = 8
Split 8 into 6 and 2
16 − 6 = 10
10 − 2 = 8
For subtraction, the first part moves the starting number back to the previous multiple of 10. The child then subtracts what is left.

How the “Make 10 First” Strategy Works

The game deliberately asks for the small numbers inside the method before it asks for the final answer. That helps children practise partitioning instead of relying only on counting forwards or backwards.

Find the number that reaches 10

For 8 + 6, the first useful fact is 8 + 2 = 10. For 16 − 8, the first useful fact is 16 − 6 = 10.

Split the second number

The number being added or subtracted is partitioned into two parts. In 8 + 6, the 6 becomes 2 + 4. In 16 − 8, the 8 becomes 6 + 2.

Finish from the friendly 10

Once 10 is reached, the remaining step is easier to see: 10 + 4 = 14 or 10 − 2 = 8.

Number Bonds Are Part of Early NSW Additive Thinking

The current NSW Mathematics K–10 syllabus explicitly connects early addition and subtraction learning with part–whole relationships, number bonds and partitioning. This game is an independent practice activity designed to reinforce those ideas in a visual way.

Children represent the relationship between the parts that form a whole, with numbers up to 10. This is the foundation behind learning number bonds to 10.

Why This Number Bonds Game Has No Timer

Speed can come later. For a child who is still learning how numbers split and recombine, seeing the correct structure matters more than racing to the answer. The game therefore keeps the working visible and lets children choose each number deliberately.

This approach is especially useful when a student can calculate by counting but struggles to explain a quicker mental strategy. Once the bridge-to-10 method makes sense, children can practise fluency through our other free mental maths games.

What to Ask While a Child Plays

A short question can reveal whether the child understands the number relationship or is only guessing from the buttons.

“How much do we need to make 10?”

This checks whether the child can recognise the missing number bond without counting all the way from the beginning.

“What is left after we use that part?”

This focuses attention on partitioning. For 8 + 6, if 2 is used to make 10, the child should see that 4 remains.

“Can you tell me the whole story?”

Ask the child to say the steps aloud: “8 needs 2 to make 10; 4 is left; 10 plus 4 is 14.” Verbalising the strategy can show whether it is truly understood.

What are number bonds to 10?
Number bonds to 10 are pairs of numbers that combine to make 10, such as 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 and 5. Children can use these facts in both addition and subtraction.
What does “make 10 first” mean in addition?
It means splitting the number being added so that one part takes the starting number to 10. For example, in 8 + 6, split 6 into 2 and 4. Then 8 + 2 = 10 and 10 + 4 = 14.
How does the strategy work for subtraction?

What should I do if my child keeps guessing?
Return to Level 1 and use physical objects, fingers, counters or drawings alongside the game. Ask the child to explain which two parts make 10.
