Current NSW Selective test

Mathematical Reasoning is about applying maths—not learning a separate Selective maths syllabus

The current NSW Selective High School Placement Test asks students to apply mathematical understanding to unfamiliar problems under time pressure. The maths concepts come from mathematics students already encounter at school.

Understand the question

A mathematically capable student can still lose marks by rushing, misreading conditions or solving a different problem from the one that was actually asked.

Choose an efficient method

Selective preparation should not turn every question into a long calculation. Students need to recognise useful shortcuts, relationships and efficient approaches.

Work accurately under time pressure

Speed matters, but speed without understanding creates avoidable mistakes. We build accuracy first and then work on efficiency.

Current test information — checked October 2026: The NSW Department of Education currently lists Mathematical Reasoning as 35 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, worth 25% of the Selective High School Placement Test. The test is computer-based and calculators are not permitted. Check the current NSW Department of Education test information.

Selective maths preparation should build both mathematical understanding and confidence with unfamiliar questions.
How we teach

Foundations first. Reasoning second. Speed after the method makes sense.

We do not start every student with the hardest Selective questions. The first step is understanding whether the maths underneath the question is strong enough.

If a student is weak in fractions, ratios, percentages, equations or geometry, simply giving them harder reasoning questions may create more frustration without solving the underlying problem.

  • Check important mathematical foundations
  • Explain the relevant concept clearly
  • Practise ordinary examples where necessary
  • Move into unfamiliar reasoning questions
  • Discuss why one method may be faster than another
  • Introduce timed practice progressively
  • Review mistakes after every major paper or question set
Mathematical foundations

Selective reasoning becomes much harder when the underlying maths is weak

Mathematical Reasoning can draw on a broad range of school mathematics. The exact balance varies from paper to paper, so we use student performance to determine which foundations deserve attention.

Arithmetic fluency

Faster addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can reduce the time spent on routine calculations during a timed paper.

BODMAS and multi-step working

Students need to maintain accuracy when calculations require several connected operations.

Review the BODMAS guide →

Patterns and number relationships

Good reasoning often depends on recognising structure rather than immediately reaching for a long calculation.

Exam-paper focused preparation

When foundations are strong, practice papers become the main teaching tool

For a student who already has strong school mathematics, we may spend a large proportion of tutoring time working through Selective-style Mathematical Reasoning papers.

The paper itself becomes a diagnostic tool. It tells us which questions are taking too long, what types of mistakes recur and which concepts need to be reviewed before the next paper.

1

Attempt

Complete a paper or timed question set with realistic time pressure.

2

Measure

Look at accuracy, unfinished questions, slow questions and avoidable mistakes.

3

Diagnose

Identify whether the problem was knowledge, interpretation, calculation, reasoning or time management.

4

Target

Review the weak area, practise similar questions and then return to another mixed paper.

Practice materials

We do not pretend that every useful Selective question has to be written by us

Our tutoring uses suitable questions from different sources so that the student experiences varied wording, formats and reasoning styles.

Depending on the student's level and stage of preparation, we may use official NSW practice materials and older practice papers, commercially published Selective preparation books and additional maths exercises where a foundation needs strengthening.

Resources used in tutoring may include materials from Excel, Five Senses and Selective preparation books by authors such as Ray Lee, Jimmy Liu and Ian Bull.

We do not reproduce commercial books on this website. The purpose of using a variety of legitimate resources is to expose students to different mathematical reasoning styles and then use their performance to guide the next lesson.

Important format note: older NSW PDF practice papers can still be useful for practising Mathematical Reasoning questions, but the current placement test is computer-based. Students should also become familiar with the current online test environment.

Speed without rushing

Faster working should come from better decisions—not careless calculation

Mathematical Reasoning is timed, so efficient working matters. But repeatedly telling a student to “go faster” is not a strategy.

Recognise easier questions

Students should avoid spending unnecessary time on questions that can be solved with a straightforward calculation or relationship.

Use efficient calculation

Strong number facts, proportional reasoning and mental calculation can reduce working time without sacrificing accuracy.

Know when to move on

Timed papers help students recognise when a difficult question is consuming too much of the available testing time.

How we track progress

Practice-paper performance is our main benchmark

Progress is not judged only by whether a student says that the lesson felt easier. We look at what happens when the student attempts mixed, timed mathematical reasoning questions.

Accuracy

Is the percentage of correct answers improving?

Completion

Is the student reaching more of the paper within the available time?

Error patterns

Are mistakes coming from the same topic or reasoning habit repeatedly?

Question efficiency

Is the student choosing shorter and more reliable methods where appropriate?

Who this tutoring is for

We accept students at different stages—but preparation needs enough time to be meaningful

Some students begin while their foundations still need work. Others begin with strong maths and mainly need Mathematical Reasoning and exam-paper practice.

Student with foundation gaps

We first strengthen the mathematics that keeps causing difficulties, then move into more demanding reasoning questions.

Strong maths student

The focus can shift quickly toward unfamiliar Mathematical Reasoning questions, timed sets and full practice papers.

Very late preparation

We generally avoid taking a new student only three or four weeks before the Selective test when substantial preparation is expected. There may simply not be enough time to address foundations and build meaningful exam experience.

Lesson frequency

There is no compulsory Selective tutoring schedule

Lesson frequency remains the parent's choice and should depend on the student's needs, available preparation time, school workload and independent practice.

Once per week

This may suit families wanting lighter support, but it can provide limited time for students who require both foundation work and significant exam-paper practice.

Twice per week

Two one-hour lessons can allow a more consistent cycle of concept work, reasoning questions, paper practice and review.

Three times per week

For families choosing a more intensive preparation schedule, three one-hour lessons can provide more room for repeated exam practice while still revisiting weak mathematical areas.

We do not claim that a particular number of lessons guarantees a Selective result. Frequency is discussed with the parent based on the individual student's situation.

Strengthen the maths underneath Mathematical Reasoning

Selective preparation is easier when students already have strong school mathematics. Families can use our free tests and topic guides to practise important foundations outside tutoring sessions.

Transparent tutoring

Selective preparation is an additional maths service—not our entire business

The core focus of Aussie Math Tutor NSW is personalised maths tutoring for students in Years 1–10. Selective Mathematical Reasoning preparation is one of the additional services we can provide for students whose goals include the Selective High School Placement Test.

We do not describe ourselves as a specialist Selective coaching college. We do not teach all four Selective test sections. Our role is narrower: provide strong private maths tutoring, identify mathematical weaknesses, build reasoning skill and help students become more comfortable solving Mathematical Reasoning questions under exam conditions.

No placement guarantee: tutoring cannot guarantee admission to a Selective High School. Student performance, the broader placement process and factors outside tutoring determine the final outcome.

Start with the maths

Before harder Selective questions, find out whether the foundations are ready

The free assessment helps us understand the student's current mathematics before deciding how much emphasis should go toward foundations, reasoning questions or exam-paper practice.

1. Check foundations

Look for weaknesses in the mathematics needed to approach reasoning questions confidently.

2. Observe reasoning

See how the student interprets unfamiliar or multi-step questions.

3. Identify priorities

Decide whether early tutoring should focus on concepts, question technique or timed practice.

4. Discuss the next step

Parents can decide whether private Selective maths tutoring is appropriate after understanding the student's needs.

Parent questions

Selective School Maths Tutoring FAQs

Clear answers about Mathematical Reasoning tutoring, test preparation, lesson frequency, materials and realistic expectations.

Which part of the Selective High School test do you teach?

We teach only the Mathematical Reasoning section. We do not provide Reading, Writing or Thinking Skills coaching as part of this service.

How many questions are in the Selective Mathematical Reasoning test?

Under the current NSW Department of Education format, Mathematical Reasoning contains 35 multiple-choice questions and students have 40 minutes to complete the section. The section currently contributes 25% of the Selective placement test weighting.

Can students use a calculator?

No. Under the current NSW Selective test format calculators are not permitted. Students can use paper for working.

Is there a separate Selective maths syllabus?

The NSW Department of Education explains that Mathematical Reasoning uses mathematical concepts students already learn at school. The challenge is applying that knowledge to new and unfamiliar problems. That is why we place substantial emphasis on strong mathematical foundations.

Do you start with difficult Selective questions immediately?

Not necessarily. If the student's foundations are weak, we first work on the mathematics creating the difficulty. Once those foundations are stronger, we increase the amount of reasoning and exam-style practice.

What maths topics can matter for Selective Mathematical Reasoning?

Questions can draw on different areas of school mathematics. Depending on the student's needs, tutoring may revisit number operations, fractions, percentages, ratios, equations, patterns, geometry, area, volume, measurement and other relevant concepts.

Families can also use our free NSW maths resources to strengthen these foundations.

Do you use Selective exam papers?

Yes. Exam-style papers and question sets are an important part of the tutoring, particularly for students whose mathematical foundations are already strong. We use paper performance to identify slow questions, recurring mistakes and areas needing revision.

Do older Selective practice papers match the current test format?

Not exactly. Older NSW PDF practice papers were produced for the earlier paper-based testing format, while the current placement test is computer-based. Older questions can still be useful for reasoning practice, but students should also become familiar with the current computer-based environment.

What books and resources do you use?

Depending on the student, we may use official NSW practice materials, past or older practice papers and established commercial resources including Excel, Five Senses and Selective preparation books by authors such as Ray Lee, Jimmy Liu and Ian Bull.

How do you measure a student's progress?

Practice-paper performance is the main benchmark. We look at accuracy, how much of the paper the student can complete, recurring mistakes, slow question types and the mathematical areas responsible for lost marks.

How often should a student have Selective maths tutoring?

We do not impose a fixed schedule. The parent decides what is practical. For students undertaking more serious preparation, two or three one-hour lessons per week can provide more time for paper practice and review than one weekly lesson. No lesson frequency guarantees a particular test result.

Will you accept a student only a few weeks before the Selective test?

Generally we prefer not to begin substantial Selective preparation only three or four weeks before the test. If foundations or exam technique need significant work, there may not be enough time to address them properly.

Is Selective maths tutoring more expensive than normal maths tutoring?

No. We do not charge a special premium simply because a student is preparing for Selective Mathematical Reasoning. Our normal tutoring pricing applies.

You can start with a free maths assessment before deciding whether ongoing tutoring is appropriate.

Is tutoring available online across NSW?

Yes. Online maths tutoring is available across NSW. Face-to-face lessons may be available within our normal local Sydney service area.

Do you guarantee Selective School placement?

No. We do not guarantee placement, scores, rankings or admission to a particular school. Our role is to provide private mathematical support and help the student prepare as effectively as reasonably possible.

Are you a specialist Selective coaching college?

No. Aussie Math Tutor NSW is primarily a personalised Years 1–10 maths tutoring service. Selective Mathematical Reasoning is an additional maths service. Our focus is private maths tutoring rather than intensive coaching across every section of the Selective test.
