What a NSW homeschool maths program needs to do

In NSW, the educational program must be based on the relevant NESA syllabuses, suit the child’s identified learning needs, allocate sufficient learning time, and include systems for planning, supervision, records, progress and achievement.

Use the NSW stage statements, outcomes and/or content to decide what your child will learn and how activities connect to the curriculum.

Year level is useful, but the real starting point may be an earlier or later stage for a particular skill. Plan around strengths, gaps, pace, needs and interests.

Match the school year to the NSW maths stage

NSW syllabuses are organised by stages. For home schooling, parents may select the stage or stages appropriate to each subject. That means a Year 7 student could work on Stage 4 content overall while revisiting selected Stage 3 fraction skills where foundations are missing.

The goal is not to label a child as “behind.” It is to find the prerequisite skill that makes the next topic achievable.

Seven steps for building a homeschool maths plan

A useful program is specific enough to guide the next lesson, but flexible enough to change when your child needs more time, a different explanation or a greater challenge.

Start with educational history and current evidence

Review previous reports, completed work, assessments, parent observations and the child’s confidence. Avoid choosing a starting point from age alone.

Identify the relevant stage and prerequisite skills

Choose the likely NSW stage, then check whether earlier skills—such as place value, multiplication facts or fraction equivalence—need attention first.

Select a small number of term priorities

Choose several meaningful goals rather than attempting to teach the entire syllabus at once. Include a balance of number, measurement/space, and statistics/probability over time.

Break each priority into teachable steps

Move from concrete examples to diagrams and symbols. Include explanation, guided practice, independent practice and application.

Plan a flexible weekly rhythm

Shorter, regular contact can work better than one long block. Build in review, fluency, reasoning and practical applications rather than worksheets alone.

Collect evidence while learning happens

Date selected work, annotate a photo, retain a corrected task or write a short note. Record-keeping should support learning—not overwhelm the day.

Use evidence to decide whether to revisit a skill, change a resource, move to a more advanced stage or allocate additional time to a difficult area.

A flexible rhythm is more useful than recreating school at home

NSW guidance allows families to organise learning at different times of the day or week. You still need to allocate enough time for curriculum coverage, but the evidence does not have to look like a conventional school timetable.

The examples below are planning ideas—not official minimum hours. Adapt them to your child’s age, concentration, other learning areas and current needs.

Evidence without overload

Keep records that show learning, not just completed pages

Official NSW guidance recognises different forms of evidence, including work samples, digital evidence, journals, outcome records, external assessments and summaries of progress. Select evidence that reveals understanding, application, improvement or an area that needs further coverage.

Before the activity

Record the stage, focus area or skill you intend to address and why it is appropriate for the child.

During the activity

Notice the method used, level of independence, misconceptions, use of diagrams and mathematical language.

After the activity

Add one or two sentences: what the child demonstrated, what feedback was given and what the next step will be.

Stage 3 – fractions: “Used a number line to compare unlike fractions. Correctly explained why 3/4 is greater than 2/3 after finding equivalent fractions. Next step: solve mixed word problems without a visual prompt.”

Common planning problems

Five mistakes that can make homeschool maths harder than it needs to be

1. Starting from the year-level book only

A student may need a prerequisite from an earlier stage or an extension task from a later stage. Use evidence to choose the starting point.

2. Covering content without working mathematically

Correct answers matter, but so do explanation, reasoning, problem solving and the ability to apply a method in a new context.

3. Changing resources too quickly

A difficult topic may need a different explanation—not a completely new curriculum. First identify whether the barrier is knowledge, language, confidence or attention.

4. Keeping every worksheet

A smaller selection of annotated evidence is often more informative than boxes of undated pages with no explanation of progress.

5. Waiting too long to check foundations

Repeated difficulty with algebra, ratios or percentages is often linked to earlier gaps in operations, fractions, decimals or place value.

6. Letting maths become a daily conflict

When teaching is damaging confidence or the parent-child relationship, a different pace, format or external maths tutor may help.

When extra support may help

Your child does not need to struggle through every maths topic alone

External support may be useful when the starting level is unclear, lessons repeatedly end in frustration, secondary maths has become difficult to teach, or the child needs structured progress towards returning to school.

Does homeschool maths in NSW have to follow the NSW syllabus?

The educational program must be based on and taught in accordance with the relevant NESA syllabuses. Parents can use stage statements, outcomes and/or content to prepare the program and can select the stage or stages appropriate to each subject.

Does my child have to work exactly at their school year level?

Not necessarily for every skill. NSW guidance allows parents to select appropriate stages for each subject, and programs can be adjusted as the child’s needs change. A child may revisit earlier prerequisites in one area while progressing more quickly in another.

Do we need to copy a school timetable?

No. Home schooling does not need to reflect a school timetable, and learning may take place at different times of the day or week. Parents must still be able to show that enough time has been allocated to cover the curriculum during the registration period.

What should I keep as evidence of maths learning?

Useful evidence may include dated work samples, annotated photographs, digital activities, assessment results, records of achievement, student reflections and brief summaries of progress. Choose examples that show understanding, application, gaps or learning gains.

How often should I review the maths program?

Review it regularly enough to respond to progress and changing needs. A short weekly check and a more detailed term review can help you decide whether to revise content, adjust time, change resources or move to more advanced learning.

Yes, commercial programs and external resources may be used. The parent remains responsible for checking how they connect to current NESA syllabuses, filling any gaps and supervising and recording the overall educational program.
