The current NSW Mathematics K–10 syllabus organises Stage 2 learning across Number and algebra, Measurement and space, and Statistics and probability, with Working mathematically embedded throughout.

Important curriculum point: Stage 2 covers Years 3 and 4. NSW Curriculum states that Part A and Part B do not simply mean Year 3 and Year 4. Teachers can revisit earlier concepts or move into later concepts according to student learning needs.

Assessment design

How this Year 4 maths test was built

The main reference for this paper is the current NSW Stage 2 Mathematics syllabus. The test samples the Stage 2 outcomes for place value, decimals, additive and multiplicative relations, fractions, measurement, spatial structure, data and chance.

Historical Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy papers can still be useful when designing a Year 4 assessment because NAPLAN takes place early in Year 5 and much of the test draws on prior learning. They are especially useful for calibrating concise word problems, interpretation tasks and reasoning. However, this page does not copy NAPLAN questions and is not presented as a NAPLAN test.

Year 4 Maths Test NSW FAQs

Is this an official NSW Year 4 exam?

No. It is an independent practice paper based broadly on current Stage 2 outcomes. NSW schools can organise the order of Stage 2 content differently.

Why does Year 4 use Stage 2?

In NSW, Stage 2 spans Years 3 and 4. The syllabus is stage-based, and Part A and Part B do not map rigidly to one school year each.

Can Year 5 NAPLAN papers be used as Year 4 practice?

Yes, particularly as an end-of-Year-4 or Year-5-readiness benchmark. However, they should not replace a Stage 2 syllabus-based assessment because NAPLAN can include a smaller number of questions drawing on current- and following-year content.

When should a Year 4 student take this test?

It is strongest as a broad mid-to-late Year 4 diagnostic, an end-of-year revision test or a readiness check before Year 5. Earlier in the year, unfamiliar content should be treated as information about what has not yet been taught.

What should parents do with the result?

Use the strand breakdown to identify the next learning priority. A child who loses marks mostly in multiplication needs a different plan from a child whose main difficulty is measurement, fractions or reading data.
