Why this division game starts without remainders

The game uses exact division facts so students can first become secure with equal groups, multiplication fact families and the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. Remainders are important, but they are easier to understand once the basic facts are stable.

Understand equal sharing

A question such as 24 ÷ 6 can mean sharing 24 objects equally into 6 groups. The answer tells us how many objects are in each group.

Understand grouping

Division can also ask how many groups can be made. If 24 objects are placed into groups of 6, then four equal groups can be formed.

Connect multiplication and division

If a student knows 6 × 4 = 24, then 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6 become connected facts instead of separate rules to memorise.

NSW Mathematics K–10 connection

Division develops from equal groups into multiplicative reasoning

In the NSW Mathematics K–10 syllabus, division grows alongside multiplication. Younger students work with sharing and grouping, while Stage 2 students use multiplicative relations and solve multiplication and division number sentences with missing values.

  • Stage 1 — MA1-FG-01: students use equal groups to solve multiplication problems and share or group to solve division problems.
  • Stage 2 — MA2-MR-01: students represent and use multiplicative relations to 10 × 10 to solve problems.
  • Stage 2 — MA2-MR-02: students complete multiplication and division number sentences by finding missing values.
  • Working mathematically: students develop understanding, fluency, reasoning, communication and problem-solving rather than treating division as a disconnected procedure.
The game's ÷12, ÷15 and ÷20 levels are extension practice. They are included for students who want additional fluency, not because NSW Stage 2 requires every child to memorise division facts to 20.
Stage 1: sharing and grouping Build meaning before expecting rapid recall.
Stage 2: multiplicative relations Connect multiplication and division facts rather than learning each operation separately.
Missing-value questions The game includes forms such as 42 ÷ ? = 6 and ? ÷ 7 = 6 to strengthen inverse thinking.

The shortcut that actually makes sense

Use multiplication facts to make division easier

A common reason division feels difficult is that the student treats every question as a brand-new calculation. Fact families reduce the amount that needs to be remembered because one multiplication fact produces two related division facts.

7 × 6 = 42
42 ÷ 7 = 6
6 × 7 = 42
42 ÷ 6 = 7

If division is weak, check these first

Can the student make equal groups? If not, return to objects, drawings, arrays or counters before expecting abstract division.
Are the multiplication facts secure? Weak times-table recall often makes simple division unnecessarily slow.
Can the student recognise inverse facts? Knowing 8 × 4 = 32 should help with both 32 ÷ 8 and 32 ÷ 4.
Can the student explain the answer? Ask what the quotient means: number in each group, or number of groups.

Choose the level that matches the child's current understanding, not simply the school year. A Year 5 student who is still unsure about equal groups may benefit from a lower level before working on more complex division.

3–4

Years 3–4: connect facts to 10 × 10

What division should a Year 1 or Year 2 child practise?
At this stage, the important idea is sharing or grouping equally. Use objects, drawings and easy facts before expecting fast abstract calculation. Level 1 keeps the game to familiar ÷2, ÷5 and ÷10 fact families.
What division work is important in Stage 2 NSW maths?
