NSW Selective Mathematical Reasoning

Apply School Mathematics to Unfamiliar Problems

Selective Mathematical Reasoning is not simply about memorising a separate list of advanced formulas. Students need to apply mathematical understanding to unfamiliar problems while working accurately under time pressure.

Understand the Question

Students need to identify the important information, conditions and mathematical relationships before beginning the calculation.

Choose an Efficient Method

Good reasoning may involve recognising a pattern, relationship or shortcut instead of using a long calculation.

Work Accurately Under Time Pressure

Speed matters, but accuracy and understanding come first. Efficiency is developed progressively once the method makes sense.

Current test information: the existing NSW Selective test information used on this page lists Mathematical Reasoning as 35 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, contributing 25% of the test weighting. Calculators are not permitted and the current placement test is computer-based. Check the latest NSW Department of Education information →

Start with the maths

Start With a Free 45-Minute Tutor Assessment

Before moving heavily into difficult Selective questions, it is useful to understand whether the student's mathematical foundations are ready.

1

Check Foundations

Look for weaknesses in the mathematics needed to approach reasoning questions confidently.

2

Observe Reasoning

See how the student interprets unfamiliar and multi-step mathematical questions.

3

Identify Priorities

Determine whether the early focus should be concepts, reasoning, calculation efficiency or paper practice.

4

Discuss the Next Step

Parents can decide whether ongoing Selective maths tutoring is appropriate after discussing the student's needs.

Student preparing for Selective School Mathematical Reasoning
Selective preparation should build mathematical understanding before pushing speed and difficult exam-style questions.
How we prepare students

Foundations → Reasoning → Efficiency → Practice Papers

We do not automatically begin every student with the hardest Selective questions. The correct starting point depends on the mathematics underneath those questions.

If fractions, percentages, ratios, equations, multiplication or geometry are weak, repeatedly giving harder Mathematical Reasoning questions may create frustration without fixing the real problem.

  • Check prerequisite mathematical skills
  • Explain important concepts clearly
  • Practise ordinary examples where necessary
  • Move progressively into unfamiliar reasoning questions
  • Compare different solution methods
  • Develop calculation efficiency
  • Introduce timed work progressively
  • Review recurring errors after practice papers

Strong Reasoning Depends on Strong Maths Foundations

Mathematical Reasoning questions can draw on different areas of school mathematics. The student's performance determines which areas deserve the most attention.

Practice Papers Become More Valuable Once the Foundations Are Ready

For a student with strong school mathematics, a larger proportion of tutoring can move toward Selective-style Mathematical Reasoning questions, timed sets and full practice papers.

Practice-paper performance helps identify whether lost marks are being caused by knowledge gaps, interpretation, calculation errors, slow working, reasoning difficulty or time management.

1

Attempt

Complete a suitable paper or timed question set.

2

Measure

Review accuracy, unfinished questions and slow question types.

3

Diagnose

Identify the reason behind errors rather than only recording the final score.

4

Target

Review weak areas before returning to another mixed paper.

Private maths tutor reviewing Mathematical Reasoning questions with a student
One-to-one tutoring allows recurring mistakes and slow question types to be reviewed individually rather than following a fixed class pace.
Practice materials

Varied Questions Help Students Prepare for Unfamiliar Problems

Depending on the student's stage of preparation, lessons can use official NSW practice material, suitable commercially published Selective preparation resources and targeted maths exercises where foundations need strengthening.

Official Practice Material

NSW practice materials can help students understand question style and current test expectations.

Varied Mathematical Reasoning

Using different legitimate resources helps students experience varied wording and problem structures instead of memorising one book.

Current Computer-Based Format

Older paper-based questions may still be useful for reasoning practice, but students should also become familiar with the current computer-based testing environment.

Standard tutoring fees

No Special Selective Tutoring Premium

Selective Mathematical Reasoning tutoring uses the same standard one-to-one lesson pricing as our regular maths tutoring.

One Session Per Week

$70 AUD per 60-minute lesson

Suitable for students needing regular weekly support alongside independent practice.

  • Private one-to-one lesson
  • Foundations or reasoning work
  • Practice-paper review where appropriate
Flexible preparation

Online Across NSW or Face-to-Face in Our Local Sydney Area

There is no compulsory Selective tutoring schedule. The appropriate frequency depends on the student's foundations, preparation time, school workload and independent practice.

Online Across NSW

Live one-to-one lessons can include shared working, reasoning questions, timed sets and detailed paper review.

Local Face-to-Face Tutoring

Face-to-face Selective Mathematical Reasoning tutoring may be available in our regular local Sydney tutoring areas, subject to location and timetable availability.

Start Early Enough

Where substantial foundation work is required, beginning only a few weeks before the test may not provide enough time for meaningful preparation.

Parent questions

Selective School Maths Tutoring FAQs

Clear answers about our Mathematical Reasoning tutoring scope, preparation approach, fees and assessment process.

Which part of the Selective High School test do you teach?
We teach only the Mathematical Reasoning component. Reading, Writing and Thinking Skills coaching are not included in this service.
How many Mathematical Reasoning questions are in the current test?
The current test information used on this page lists 35 multiple-choice Mathematical Reasoning questions with 40 minutes to complete the section. The section currently contributes 25% of the Selective placement test weighting.
Can students use a calculator?
No. Calculators are not permitted under the current Selective test format. Students can use paper for working.
Do you start with difficult Selective questions immediately?
Not necessarily. If important mathematical foundations are weak, we first strengthen those areas and then progressively increase the amount of reasoning and timed exam-style practice.
Which maths topics can matter for Selective Mathematical Reasoning?
Questions can involve different areas of school mathematics. Depending on the student, tutoring may revisit number operations, fractions, percentages, ratios, equations, patterns, geometry, measurement and other relevant mathematical concepts.
Do you use Selective practice papers?
Yes. Practice papers and timed question sets become increasingly important once the student's underlying maths is sufficiently strong. Paper performance helps identify recurring errors, slow question types and areas needing revision.
How much does Selective maths tutoring cost?
The standard rate is $70 per 60-minute lesson. The rate is $60 per 60-minute lesson when at least two regular sessions are booked each week. We do not charge a special Selective premium.
Is Selective maths tutoring available online across NSW?
Yes. Online maths tutoring is available across NSW. Face-to-face lessons may also be available within our regular local Sydney service area.
What happens during the free tutor assessment?
The free tutor assessment lasts approximately 45 minutes. We discuss the student's current preparation, use suitable maths questions, observe Mathematical Reasoning and identify whether the priority is foundations, reasoning, efficiency or paper practice.
Is the Aussie Maths Learning Map the same as the tutor assessment?
No. The Aussie Maths Learning Map is a self-guided online maths check. The free 45-minute tutor assessment is tutor-led and is the main starting point for families considering ongoing tutoring.
Do you guarantee Selective School placement?
No. We do not guarantee placement, test scores, rankings or admission to a particular school. Our role is to provide personalised maths support and help the student prepare as effectively as reasonably possible.
