This is an independent, original Aussie Math Tutor NSW practice test designed as a broad Year 5 / Stage 3 revision paper. NSW schools can sequence Stage 3 content differently, so a student may not have covered every topic at the same point in the year.

The test is organised around the current NSW Mathematics K–10 structure: Number and algebra, Measurement and space, and Statistics and probability, with Working mathematically embedded through contextual and multi-step questions.

Why the paper is broader than the topic list in a single school assessment: a school test might assess only the units taught in that term—for example representing numbers, additive relations, multiplication, 2D/3D space, area and data. A page called Free Year 5 Maths Test NSW is more useful when it samples the wider set of Year 5 / Stage 3 skills rather than one school's term sequence.

Assessment design

How this Year 5 maths test was built

This paper uses the current NSW Stage 3 mathematics structure as its curriculum base and uses historical Year 5 NAPLAN papers only as a secondary reference for short contextual questions, visual interpretation, distractor style and mathematical reasoning.

Historical Year 5 NAPLAN papers are useful references, but they are not a complete full-year Year 5 syllabus blueprint. NAPLAN questions are based mostly on skills students are expected to have learned in previous years, with a smaller number drawing on content from the year of testing and the following year. This is why the best use of a Year 5 NAPLAN paper is as a start-of-Year-5 diagnostic and question-style reference, not as the sole source for a full-year Year 5 exam.

What we deliberately avoided

Copying ACARA questions, diagrams, artwork or wording. Every test question on this page is newly written for Aussie Math Tutor NSW.

For a Year 4 exam: use the NSW Stage 2 syllabus as the main blueprint. Year 5 NAPLAN can be used as an extension or transition benchmark, but it should not simply be relabelled as a Year 4 exam because some NAPLAN items deliberately reach beyond prior-year content.

Year 5 Maths Test NSW FAQs

Is this an official NSW Year 5 exam?

No. NSW Mathematics is organised by stages and schools can sequence Stage 3 content differently. This is an independent broad Year 5 practice exam designed to sample commonly relevant Stage 3 skills.

Should a student take this test at the start or end of Year 5?

It can be used at both points for different purposes. At the start of Year 5, use it diagnostically and focus on what the student already knows. Near the end of Year 5, use it as a broader revision and readiness check.

Are Year 5 NAPLAN papers really Year 4 level?

Not exactly. NAPLAN is administered early in Year 5 and most questions are based on skills taught in previous years, so the papers are very useful as a Year 4-to-Year 5 transition benchmark. However, a smaller number of items can draw on content from the year of testing and the following year, so the paper should not simply be relabelled as a Year 4 exam.

Why does this test include fractions, decimals and chance?

Because a single school assessment topic list may cover only part of the year's program. A broad Year 5 practice page should sample the wider number, measurement, spatial, data and chance skills students develop through Stage 3.

What should I do after the test?

Look at the strand breakdown rather than only the total score. Review incorrect questions, identify whether the issue was knowledge, calculation, reading or strategy, practise the underlying skill, then retest with different questions.
