Frequently asked questions

NSW Maths Syllabus and practice questions

Are the maths practice resources free?
Many practice tests, topic explanations and maths games can be used immediately without creating an account. Personalised tutoring and assessment services require a booking.
Are these official NSW Government resources?
No. Aussie Math Tutor NSW is an independent tutoring and education website. Its resources are developed with reference to NSW syllabus outcomes and common school programs. The official curriculum is published by the NSW Education Standards Authority.
Do all NSW schools teach maths topics in the same order?
Schools work towards the required NSW syllabus outcomes, but they may vary the sequence, pace, depth, teaching methods and resources. A year guide should be used as an overview, not a compulsory term-by-term timetable.
Which NSW stage is my child in?
Stage 1 covers Years 1–2, Stage 2 covers Years 3–4, Stage 3 covers Years 5–6, Stage 4 covers Years 7–8 and Stage 5 covers Years 9–10.
Which students sit NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Strong preparation should include underlying number knowledge, mathematical reasoning and familiarity with different question formats.
What should I do when I do not know my child’s current maths level?
Begin with the current school-year guide, then check whether the difficulty comes from an earlier prerequisite topic. A short assessment is often the fastest way to identify the correct starting point.
